The media space in the past few months have been dominated by disturbing news of unjust assaults and killings of innocent citizens by law enforcement – particularly the Nigerian Police Force.
Several victims of assaults and harassment do not get justice, even after reporting erring officers to their respective divisions.
Here are the reasons the assault and killings of innocent citizens, which have been going on for years, do not look like they’ll stop:
1. NO ONE IS WILLING TO TAKE A STAND: Yes, everybody is scared. No one is willing to stand up to these uncultured and unprofessional officers and proclaim their rights .
Many Nigerians do not even know their rights. ‘Give unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar,’ many will say.
The officers do not even know citizens’ rights, or they simply do not care.
It is a known fact that corruption eats deep into every sector in the country. The Nigeria Police Force is not left out.
Officers extort citizens in the name of checking vehicular papers. They waylay any young citizens that dare to own exotic phones or laptops.
In the end, the ‘offender’ is asked to ‘drop’ something
3. NO GRAVE CONSEQUENCE FOR UNPROFESSIONAL OFFICERS TOUGH TALK, NO ACTION.
While the IG of Police and Commissioners across all states have
talked tough on administering strict punitive measures on erring officers, little has been seen to that effect by the general public.
Officers go about committing crimes, knowing fully well that they would most likely be protected by the Force.
Hence it is easy to threaten uncooperative ‘offenders’ of roping them in crimes they haven’t committed.
4. CITIZENS HAVE NO TRUST IN POLICE
The sight of a police officer with gun is enough to send shivers down the spine of law-abiding citizens, because they know you don’t have to be a criminal to fall on the receiving end of harassment or assault.
Lack of trust in the Nigeria Police Force is partly why victims of assaults or families of unjust killings will ‘leave the matter to God.’
It is also the reason for citizens would rather mete out jungle justice on alleged ‘criminals’.
All of these reasons prove why, to put a stop to the indiscriminate killings and harassment, something drastic – a tougher clampdown on erring officers – needs to be done.
Sadly, in Nigeria, nothing hardly ever gets done right.
A Pentecostal Bishop, Rt. Rev. Seun Adeoye, has urged Nigerians to pray for the quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying his wellbeing is so important to the nation’s co-existence and stability.
Bishop Adeoye warned that if anything should happen to President Buhari, such would be a difficult burden for the nation to bear as Nigeria will fall into wrong hands that are ready do anything to turn it into their private estates.
The cleric, who spoke during the 1st Episcopal Honours and Gallantry Awards held at the weekend at Sufficient Grace and Truth Ministry, Rehoboth Arena, Okinni, Osun State, noted that only God can sustain the President’s health.
He said: “I see trouble should anything go wrong with President Buhari. So, we need to pray for his quick recovery from this ailment. Buhari must not die; Buhari must live and that should be our prayers.
“If Buhari is not the president, we will be faced with more lies and propaganda where we are going to be made to call black white. Rule of law will turn to be rule of fear and democracy will be replaced by despotism, favoritism and god-fatherism.
“We cannot allow Nigeria to be in the hand of any of the present leaders. None of them can be the captain of this ship; they will run it aground with their arrogance and selfish agenda. They will rob, strip us Unclad and put us in perpetual bondage as slaves. So, I enjoin all of us to pray for the President Buhari to get well quickly.”
On those who were honoured, Bishop Adeoye disclosed that they were shortlisted from over 100 nominees and were screened by the church’s Council of Clergy based on their courage, service to humanity and God and their various contributions to the society.
Those on the successful list were the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State, Olusola Amore; his counterpart from Osun, Fimihan Adeoye; Prof. Ayo Fatubarin; Pastor and Prof. (Mrs) Olusegun Akinwusi; Dr. Kayode Oduoye; Barrister Kanmi Ajibola; Femi Adefila; Dr. and Mrs. Niyi Oginni; and Deacon and Deaconess Moses Ajayi.
Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Akinwusi, a former Head of Service in Osun State, urged Nigerians to pray fervently for the nation and not to keep mute or look the other way when things are going the wrong in the country.)

He says he has instructed his security officers to kill any herdsmen seen around him or around his church premises.
“Somebody called me and told me that there is a plan to send Fulani herdsmen after you and I said ok and the person said I should be careful and I said careful of what. He said the herdsmen are just going to run into the road like herdsmen and begin to cause confusion and while your security men clear them and you come out, they will open fire. I said okay. After about a week, he called me and said please, if you don’t do that, they might bring them to come around church premises. I said its okay. And I told my people, any Fulani herdsman you see around you, kill him. I have told them in the church here, that any fulani herdsman that just entered by mistake, Kill him, Kill Him. Cut his head. If they are busy killing christians and nothing is happening, we will kill them and nothing will happen.” he said
